About Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day is a Canadian anti-bullying campaign that originated in Nova Scotia in 2007 and has since spread across the country. It is observed on the last Wednesday in February each year, and its primary focus is to raise awareness about the issue of bullying in schools, workplaces, and communities, as well as to promote kindness, empathy, and respect among individuals.

The history of Pink Shirt Day dates back to an incident at a high school in Nova Scotia. In 2007, a male student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. Two other students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, witnessed the bullying and decided to take a stand against it. They purchased and distributed pink shirts for their fellow students to wear in solidarity with the victim. This act of kindness and solidarity sent a powerful message against bullying and served as the inspiration for Pink Shirt Day.

Today, Pink Shirt Day has become a national movement in Canada. On this day, people across the country wear pink shirts to symbolize their commitment to preventing and addressing bullying. Schools, workplaces, and community organizations often organize various activities, events, and educational programs to promote anti-bullying messages, such as discussions on empathy, conflict resolution, and the importance of treating others with respect.

Pink Shirt Day has been successful in raising awareness about the harmful effects of bullying and promoting a culture of kindness and inclusivity. It has also inspired similar initiatives in other countries to address the issue of bullying and create safer, more respectful environments for all individuals, especially young people.
